The wedding planning crept up on me, and I have been up at night worrying about details. There is still a lot to plan, but we have gotten some big things (candy buffet, photographer, etc.) out of the way, so I'm feeling a tiny bit better with the plans right now. My biggest problem is that obviously I can't be the one to set up the centerpieces/candy buffet/guest book/table numbers/name cards on my wedding day and that is totally freaking me out. I need to hire someone super insanely organized to do that for me. Any takers??

Also, I have been working on a new spring line for my jewelry shop. While I haven't added anything for a really, really long time, I decided that I really needed to put my heart back into it. My new designs will include handmade earwires (I am so excited about being able to make my own!), sterling silver chain, and some designs with paper. My paper shop has been closed for a while, but I am still madly in love with paper -- so I found some new ways to incorporate paper into some jewelry. The predominate colors in the spring designs will be, well, springy! Pale pinks, greens, yellows, and purples. There will also be hints of deep brown, like the rich soil that the flowers are popping up out of right now.

I'll be showing some sneak peaks in the coming days. I hope to have the line launch on April 18th.

Since I'll be debuting new designs, check out the 50% off sale to clear some items out of my shop!

I promise I didn't disappear...

I was just really really really insanely busy this week. Last weekend I worked on samples for my wedding invitations (I think we are going with version 2, I'll be sure to post photos soon). This week was a bit crazy with school, I joined the gym and started working out again, and I had tons of orders to get out. I hope to be back on schedule with more posts tomorrow, I hope... but after a day in Cincinnati at some of my favorite shops, I need to get some sleep!

Giveaway Winner!

And the winner of a custom wall monogram is...

Cora Anne!! "Jamieson, that is NOT a crafting tool. That is a candle lighter." (A Bic Luminere Candle Lighter, to be exact.)

I'm going to have to disagree with you though. It is most certainly a craft tool, at least in my craft studio. I should begin by mentioning my extreme fear of matches. I can't light them. Never could. I've tried, both the book and box kind -- I am just no good at lighting matches. Which is probably because I think that you should never have a flame that close to your hand. I mean, seriously, who thought that a teeny tiny less-than-two-inch match was a good idea?

Which brings me to another fear. I am not really a fan of fire. I was a girl scout, for many years in fact. However, I never came to love the whole campfire thing. Just not my cup of tea.

That being said, this candle lighter is one of my favorite tools. Partly because it keeps the flame far, far away from my fingers.

But the main reason I love this candle lighter is because I looooooove ribbon. Its a mild obsession. Please see exhibits A, B, and C below for further proof.

Exhibit A: Ribbon organized on Ribbon Ring Tags. I found these nifty organizers after reading LollyChop's review on her blog. The ribbons are organized by color, of course. At the top you can also see my embroidery floss organized by color on rings.

Exhibit B: More ribbon on white plastic ribbon cards. All of my ribbon used to be on these cards... until I ran out of room and decided to use the ribbon ring tags. Now, I only store plain ribbon or ribbon that I have yards and yards of on these cards. They are organized by color in glass jars on a floating shelf. And clearly, I have a lot of buttons as well.

Exhibit C: The stash of unorganized ribbon in my closet in a box. This ribbon is just begging to be organized, which would be possible if I wasn't out of ribbon ring tags! Some of the plain stuff will going on the ribbon cards too.

So, there you have it. I clearly have a lot of ribbon. Polka dot, striped, gingham, grograin, floral, velvet, mmm... I love it all!!

The thing only thing I dislike about ribbon... is when the ends fray. *Cringe* It is horrible! You start out making this lovely 45 degree cut, or even a fancy V-cut in the end of a wider ribbon... and then the end starts to fray, ruining the whole thing. You can cut the end again, but inevitably it will start fraying again. *Sigh* What's a ribbon-obsessed crafter to do?!?!

This is where the candle lighter comes in. You can use the heat from the flame to seal/melt the end of the ribbon. Most of the ribbon I have works for this nifty trick. Ribbon that is all cotton or another natural material will not work (at least it doesn't work for me) -- so, most of my ribbon is synthetic stuff I guess!

Before we proceed... WARNING: Please read all warnings on the candle lighter you use before you try this nifty trick. Don't allow children to use the lighter and follow any other directions that come with your lighter. Thank you!!!

Hold your ribbon in one hand, with your fingers well away from the end (at least two to three inches. Light the lighter by pulling the trigger/button. Slowly bring the lighter closer to the end of the ribbon. I find that I have more control if I move the lighter, rather than the ribbon.

Bring the lighter near the end of the ribbon, but DO NOT touch the ribbon with the flame. We are trying to melt the end of the ribbon, not set the ribbon on fire!! It will only take a fraction of a second to melt the end of the ribbon, so please watch closely. Once you see it start to melt, move the flame away and release the trigger to turn off the flame. If you hold the flame near the ribbon end too long, it will singe/scorch and turn black. If you aren't happy with the results, cut off the melted end of the ribbon and try again.

Here is the sealed/melted end of the ribbon. Nifty, huh? And much better than messing around with that sticky ribbon sealer gluey-gooey stuff that you find a in a bottle, at least in my opinion. I've never had much luck with it. (By the way: The ducky pin snuck in the picture -- He was so proud of himself for holding the ribbon steady while I took the lighter photos! And, just for future reference, I do not recommend trying to photograph and use a lighter at the same time. Just not a good idea, folks.)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! The gingham fabric was making me really dizzy while I was trying to cut it. I made a muslin basket liner first, to make sure it would fit the basket. Then, I made a pattern out of poster board (I wanted something stiff to trace around). I still need to cut out the white lining -- the gingham was fairly sheer, so it needed a lining. But before I spill the beans... If you are LollyChops... You must slowly back away from this post. Do not read any further! I don't want to ruin the surprised in the mail!

Okay, now that LollyChops has (hopefully) left the blog-room, here is a photo of my new custom applique wall monograms:

Ahh!!! I love them so much! They are so much fun! They look great alone, or in groupings as shown. You can hang the wall monogram by setting the hoop on a hook or nail, or you can tie a ribbon around the screw at the top of the hoop.

The back of each wall monogram is finished with a coordinating ribbon to cover the edges of the fabric. The hoop frame is hand painted in a coordinating color. I also covered the back of the fabric with white felt to protect the embroidery stitches.

If you are interested in getting a custom letter of your own (you get to pick the letter, fabric, thread color, and hoop color!), check them out in my shop!

Tool Tuesday: Rotary Cutter

It seems that I am loving my sewing tools again this week. I promise, I have plenty of other tools -- I've just been doing a lot of sewing lately, that's all!

This week my must-have tool is the nifty rotary cutter. If you cut a lot of straight lines, squares, or triangles, then you need this tool! I really don't remember my life before it. Oh wait, yes I do -- tediously measuring and cutting fabric. Well, no more for me. Many of the projects I do incorporate cutting straight lines, and it really was a big pain before. I remember measuring, marking with a disappearing ink pen, using a ruler to draw lines, slow cutting, blah blah blah. Those days are long gone. Now I have this handy Fiskers rotary cutter:
I am very loyal to my Gingher scissors, but when it comes to straight lines, I must use my rotary cutter. You can even replace the blade when it gets dull (which is about every month or two for me, but I cut a whole-lots-o-fabric). It is time to get a new blade when you start having fabric that doesn't cut all the way or you are having to apply too much pressure. **By the Way** Applying too much pressure = not a good idea (I'm lucky I only nicked a fingernail to learn this lesson, I have a friend in high school who had to have a few stitches, yikes!!!). So, when you get a rotary cutter, please make sure to replace the blade when needed!

*Sigh* I do love my rotary cutter... Almost as much as my thread nippers! Its going to be hard to find another tool next week that I love as much as them, but I will try!

P.S. Don't forget to check out Monday's post to enter the thumbtacks giveaway!

P.P.S. I didn't find my battery charger for my camera yet... but I did get a new camera!!! Thanks Dad! Please excuse my photos for a while, I'm still trying to figure out how to use this new guy -- Things I used to photograph in regular mode now need to be photographed in macro, or at least I think that is why the rotary cutter was fuzzy the first 57 times I photographed it! I'm still reading the manual to learn how to use all the functions! Ick, ick, ick. They had a really weird texture and the flavors weren't great either.

However, about a month ago I threw a baby shower for a friend who is having a boy. I searched out as many blue candies as I could find, and I bought two kinds of Jelly Belly jellybeans. One kind was sour grape -- a grey-purple-blue color. I ate one, and I was hooked! Jelly Bellies are completely different than those huge pastel jellybeans of my childhood. They have bold, juicy flavors and a smoother texture. They just need to be sewn into the seam binding -- I hope to have them done by next weekend. There are a whole lot of fun new fabrics in this basket of flags! Cherries, cars, moons, some Amy Butler...

I have also been working on some scarves. Some are skinnier, but some are wider like this one. It is made from Heather Bailey fabrics -- they are really bright and bold! I love the ruffle on the end, which was a spur-of-the-moment idea. It is backed with super-soft minky fabric. Look for these in my shop soon too!

Here is a close-up of the scarf -- It isn't quite done yet, it needs to be top stitched around the edge.

And last, a mystery! This is a new idea I had, and it is quite different than anything in my shop right now. I won't give it away yet, but it will be available for custom order in my shop. Yes, hobby -- I will reorganize things that are already organized, and I am constantly searching for the "best" way to organize certain things. Sometimes, I will use an ordinary organizer (today, magazine holders) and add some type of decorative or creative flair to it. Other times I will use something in a new way, and there are even times when I make my own organizer!

Today, we'll start with something ordinary: Magazine holders. They come in all sorts of styles (metal, wood, plastic), but I never could find ones that matched my decor and were affordable. So, I used inexpensive cardboard magazine holders from Ikea and wrapping paper to make my own!

In order to make these, you need:
- cardboard magazine holders from Ikea (they come flat fold, which makes this very simple)
- spray adhesive
- scissors
- wrapping paper (obviously pick a roll or two that matches your decor)

First, lay one of the flat magazine holders on the wrapping paper. The paper should be wide enough to go around the holder, so you need to cut a piece slightly taller than the holder.

Next, (do this outside or on scrap paper) spray the entire outside of the flat magazine holder with spray adhesive (both flattened sides).

Wrap the wrapping paper around the magazine holder. There will be an area that overlaps, you can cut this off or fold it and tuck it under (that is what I did).

Once the spray adhesive is dry, use your scissors to trim the wrapping paper around the edges of the magazine holder. This is easier to do if you "unflatten" the holder (you won't be able to fully assemble the bottom until you trim off the extra wrapping paper). Once it is trimmed, assemble the bottom of the holder by tucking in the flaps. Tada!

I would love to post step-by-step photos, but I am still dealing with limited battery power on my camera and a lost charger. If you have questions, please do ask and I will try to help!

Inspiration Wednesday: Snow

The continually snowy weather here is making me miss living up north (we have another snow day today!)

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Why? Because you need them, that is why. (Just don't tell your husband/significant other that I am the one who told you that you need them.)

When I started to think of my favorite tool of the moment, there was no hesitation. It was something that I didn't think I needed, but when I did splurge and buy it, I don't know how I ever lived without it. My tool-of-the-moment that I can't live without is my pair of thread nippers. (Just like scissors, these nippers are called "pairs" I believe -- never did quite understand that.)
Now, I know, someone out there is saying, "Jamieson, I can nip my threads with scissors, why do I need thread nippers?" You are going to have to trust me on this -- If you do any amount of sewing, especially with a sewing machine or serger, you need these. I really thought they were a luxury purchase, but once I bought them (erm, they weren't cheap, but I did use a fantastic 40% off coupon to soften the blow to the wallet), I couldn't imagine sewing without them. They are much, much easier to pick up and nip (or snip, if you prefer) a thread with. You can get close to the fabric with much more ease than I was able to do with scissors -- I had already tried using all three sizes of my sewing scissors before getting these handy nippers.
There are several varieties at stores like Jo-Ann's. I went this pair from Gingher -- all of my sewing scissors are from this company, and I like them to be all matchy-matchy. Plus, they all come in these nifty storage tins (see picture)! I tied a striped ribbon around the finger hole on my nippers so that I can find them when they are hiding under fabric while I am sewing.

If anyone else has thread nipper suggestions (other brands?) or, if you have any questions, let me know!

Also, don't forget to check Monday's post to enter the giveaway to win a Robot Pencil Cup!

(Goodness, I almost forgot to mention -- the cute pins in the photo are similar to the ones I saw on Heather Bailey's blog in this post (in the pear pincushion). I have been searching for them for months, and I finally found them at Jo-Ann's! I am working on a matching pincushion to put them in, so for now they are just scattered on my sewing/craft table.)

First Giveaway!!!

The first ever giveaway is for this fun robot pencil cup!!

All you need to do to enter is post a comment and tell me what you will use your pencil cup/storage container for if you win. I can barely stop trying them long enough to get orders ready to go out on Friday -- My last ship date before Christmas. I head out of town on Friday night, and I think I might go through withdrawal because I won't have access to my craft supplies. I am going to try to get the dolls ready to be stuffed and slip-stitched, so I will have something to do. Also, my embroidery floss needs to be wound onto little plastic cards, so I can take that as well.

Back to the pouring -- I had another great idea yesterday, and I was able to try it out today. It took a shopping trip to find just the right sealer, but I found *exactly* what I was looking for -- after three shops, I was thinking I might have to settle for trying out some other things, but I finally found what I wanted at the fourth shop. I got to work as soon as I got home... and it is perfect!

I hate to leave you hanging -- but its off to bed for now! I will try to post pictures of my new idea tomorrow. I'll be wearing it tomorrow to school (hint, hint), and I hope to make more over break to put in my shop.

Something about a snow day...

There is barely a dusting here, but where I teach there is more than 3 inches, which means not one... but two snow days!

On Monday night, anticipating a snow day, I was thinking about the plush rabbit I tried to make last weekend. It didn't turn out how I wanted, I can't even post a picture! However, I suddenly had a great idea as I was falling asleep. By some miracle, I remembered the idea in the morning!

I really love small wood painted dolls, however I somehow wanted to combine the idea of a painted wood doll with a fabric doll. So, I decided to make a fabric doll in the same shape as the wood doll and add a small pocket that would hold... a matching wood doll! The photos below show my prototype, which I think turned out fairly well. I have 7 more in the works already! They will go in my Etsy shop when I am finished.

The doll front is made with a 100% linen fabric. I stitched a patchwork of cotton fabric scraps on the doll for her dress and hair. Her eyes have safety-lock backs. The back of the doll and the pocket are felt, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. The doll is stuffed with super soft bamboo fiber-fil (yes, bamboo!). The doll also has a small flower pin (removable, so you can wear it too!) made with a coordinating button, ribbon, and felt leaf. The little wood doll is hand-painted in colors that match the large fabric doll. I haven't finished the wood doll (the small "foot" at the bottom will be painted brown to match the brown felt and a sealant will be applied for durability. Also, please excuse the small bump on the bottom of the fabric doll -- I haven't slip-stitched her shut yet!!

I plan on putting the other 7 dolls in my fabricfarrago etsy shop next week. Usually I manage to convince myself that the idea is silly, no one will like it, I shouldn't even try, why bother... I don't know what it was, maybe reorganizing every single supply I own last weekend... But I finally decided I was tired of crushing every idea before it even made it to a prototype. I finally gave it an decided to try an idea. And, I like it. A lot. In fact, I wore it to meet a friend today and she even liked it. I am going to make a couple for her as a few more samples.

I have a few more ideas bouncing around, and maybe I'll give in an try those as well. I would really like to launch some new products when the new year starts.

Also, I am really thrilled because some of my work is now being sold in a b&m shop up in Cincinnati at Beehive Co-op. If you are in the area, go check it out!

And now, I am off to go have more fun with my serger -- after two years I finally got up enough nerve to try to thread the thing, and it actually works!!

Three Day Weekend

I didn't know until Wednesday that we had Monday off -- for some reason I thought that Labor Day was one of those weird holidays that bumps to the next week when it falls on the 1st of the month. I'm really happy about the three day weekend, especially because we have only been in school 8 days and I'm already feeling a bit under the weather with a sore throat.

School has been great and I'm excited about my class. I have some new challenges this year, but I'm trying to start off on the right foot by staying a little later than I did last year so I don't have to bring (much) work home with me. My plans for next week are already done!

And so, I have time this weekend to focus on my jewelry and fabric shops. I have about 20 new fabric necklaces in the works and I hope to work on some earrings or bracelets this weekend as well. Tonight is Saturday Night Special sale, which I try to participate in every week. Check out my shops for some great deals!

Long Day at School

Today I put in my first full day at school working on my classroom -- A lovely 9.5 hours of classroom cleaning fun! My main goal was to figure out where to put tables, bookshelves, etc. -- with the potential for 30 kids and no literacy program, I had to reorganize a bit. I was able to get everything where I wanted it, and started labeling AR books with their reading level (I got through 2 boxes -- Yippee!).

I feel like I am being rewarded for all my hard work, because imagine my surprise when I find I have a double dose of front page! One of my fabric necklaces is in a treasury on the front page this evening, and a set of my pushpins are in a Storque article (and since it is one of the first related items, it shows up when the article scrolls by the front page)! I am so honored, and it made my exhausting day have a very happy end. Here are the screenshots:

Messy...

Ugh, I think my beads have taken over half of my living room!!!

Goals for today:
- Clean up beads
- Cut out more muslin packaging bags
- Pack orders to ship tomorrow

Then, I am going to browse online for materials for making my own earwires. I really have been busy -- My car has decided that it wants to fall apart, which hasn't helped (I still need a new compressor = no AC for me. And yes, it is going to be 97 degrees on Wednesday, which means I won't be driving anywhere). I have been so busy, that today I realized that I really need to go grocery shopping. I mean, I really really really need to go grocery shopping. Need proof? Here is my refrigerator:

Except for some condiments on the door (which have been in there so long I am not sure they are even safe to eat), my fridge contains filtered water, iced tea, juice, two jars of raspberry preserves, half a tub of pesto, three slices of bread, and four English muffins. The bottom two drawers are empty, except for one tub of feta cheese.

I don't think my fridge has ever been empty, except for when I moved in. And so, I guess it is off to the grocery. I'm going to Kroger first (not my fav) and Whole Foods later (yum!). I don't even know what I am going to buy, except there will be some cheese -- even though it is really expensive right now, I am having a serious cheese craving. I went a whole two weeks without it!

It has been a while since I have posted, but I have been quite busy! I have been working on rephotographing photos for my jewelry shop, in addition to making bracelets and earrings (at the encouragement of my friend Tara!). I also reorganized almost every supply I own (paper, fabric, beads, etc. etc. etc.) and moved furniture around in my apartment.

And in the last week or so, I have realized that I must do the dreaded: raise prices. My thumbtacks really just aren't priced to cover my costs and my time. I am currently researching some other supply options that would allow me to keep my prices what they are now, but in the meantime I do need to raise them a smidge. I really am dreading doing it, partially because it will take a loooooong time (my goal is to get it done in an hour) and partially because I am afraid it will hurt sales. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do -- I have to value my time.

Back from "Vacation"

Phew. Isn't vacation supposed to be relaxing? We drove home to visit my mom, then to a wedding, and back here to Louisville. I think all the driving wore me out!

Despite the driving, we did get to visit some of my favorite places. We went to the Cleveland Natural History Museum one morning. My favorite part is the gems section, of course. The dinosaurs are also fascinating, and I forgot that there was a section in the back with live animals from the region. The raccoon were surprisingly endearing! Later in the afternoon we went to the botanical gardens, which I absolutely love. Someday I would love to create a similar oasis here in Louisville. Here are a few of my favorite photos of the gardens:

I have spent the last two days trying to finish up orders placed during my break. The orders are all ready, but I still need to pack and ship them. There is a sea of thumbtacks and magnets on my table -- I tried to take a photo, but it didn't turn out very well. I always feel like I have accomplished a lot when I see that sea of thumbtacks looking up at me!

Tomorrow I am headed off to the Cincinnati Zoo with one of my best friends and her son. I can't wait!

Front Page!

I was on the front page this morning! I had a tough time getting a screen shot of the whole treasury, but I got close. I think it has to do with my screen size.

Anyway, I did a whole lot of NOTHING today. Let's see... I started to try to clean out some stuff, but realized I was out of trash bags. So, I went to Target. On the way, I stopped at Borders and I was inspired by a magazine to try to organize my colored pencils and markers by color. After Target, I went to Hobby Lobby to try to find the perfect containers. No luck. Came home, sorted markers and pencils to get a better idea of the size containers I would need, and went back out to find them. Garden Ridge, Michaels... No luck. I must be insanely picky. In the end, I saved money because I replaced the containers I store my bangles, flower pins, and make-up brushes, and used those containers to put the pens an pencils in. Not quite what I wanted, but the pots are the right shade of blue (really I was looking for white or glass) to match the other storage bins on my bookshelves, so it will work. Plus, it was free :)

I tried to do some more organizing/cleaning, but it was dinner time. Then, I remembered I have my cousin's wedding to attend next weekend, and I don't really have anything to wear over my strapless dress (I'm a firm believer in layers). I wore it to a wedding last fall, but I really didn't think the sweater that I wore matched. So, off I went in search of the perfect cardigan-thingy to wear over the dress. I found something I sort of liked at Gap, but I wasn't sure it would look good with the dress. And, silly me, I didn't bring the dress with me. I went home, ate dessert, grabbed the dress, and drove to the closer Gap to see if it would work. I think it will -- I wanted to get the ivory-almost-white color, but it was too sheer in my opinion, so I got the medium brown color (I'm sure there is a better name for it, but I can't think of what it would be -- it is a medium grayish brown color).

I know none of this has anything to do with my shop, which is the point I guess. I got so distracted today, I didn't get squat done! I have high hopes for tomorrow, though... I might get up and walk in the morning, if those cicadas aren't too bad.

A Random Brainstorm

While driving home this evening, I was thinking about my stash of gift wrap. As much as I adore all the lovely wrapping paper prints out there -- I know it is truly wasteful. Gift bags are better, because they can be reused... But still, I'm not a huge fan.

So, I am on a quest to create several different kinds of reusable fabric gift wrap. I'm thinking about bags with a ribbon tie to close (similar to those I am wrapping purchases in, but with a patterned fabric outside). I'm also thinking about a large sheet of fabric that you can wrap around a boxy item, and secure it somehow (ribbon, again?). It would be nice to line the inside of each, however I think that using a patterned fabric would add to the cost, and effectively to the price. Perhaps something soft, like flannel? That way if the item is somewhat fragile, it offers a bit of protection, at least from getting scratched.

Anyway, just a late (well, late for me!) night brainstorm. I'll be thinking it over more as I go to bed!

Displaying Fabric Necklaces

This summer I am trying to reorganize all my supplies and finished products. The biggest challenge is storing everything in a way that doesn't fill my apartment with plastic containers. I'm trying to mix in other storage methods, like fabric boxes or glass jars.

My mom got me one of these metal trees at Ikea, and it is perfect for hanging and displaying my fabric necklaces. I have more now, in case I decide to do any craft shows. I can't decide if I like the white tree or the black tree best, so for now I have one of each up. If I was at a show, I obviously wouldn't hang so many on each tree, but it works right now for storage and a colorful display in my family room. They are sitting on top of a book shelf that holds bins with the rest of my finished products. I am going to make a curtain to cover the bins, since they aren't exactly attractive.

Letting Go

Today I am challenging myself to let go. Let go of being so scheduled, and planning out my day. Not feeling guilty when I don't get everything finished that I planned.

Also, I need to let go of some supplies that I am simply am not using anymore -- and that I know I won't use. I'll be selling them off in large lots through my paperfarrago shop. My heart just isn't in the paper stuff anymore -- I felt like I was doing a lot of work for very little. Realistically, I can't just treat my time as a hobby anymore, I need to start treating it more like I could someday make it my real job.

So, if you are looking for large lots of paper, stamps, buttons, and ribbon, check my paper shop. Boring? Just placemats? So, I embarked on a quest to make them more interesting, and purposeful. I like to create things that are pretty, but have a specific purpose.

In brainstorming, I thought about my notebook covers, with the ribbon ties. My thoughts wandered to all the lunches I ate at my desk at work, and I thought how nice it would be if I had a clean place to eat (do you know how many germs are on that desk from little kid hands??). The roll-up placemat idea came first, but then I thought about incorporating a pocket for the utensils. I was only going to make one pocket at first (I usually only have a spoon), but I figured some people would need all three utensils, so I created a divided pocket. I used my own silverware, which is pretty standard size, to determine how large to make the pocket.

Right now, the most difficult thing is picking the thread color for top stitching. It is hard because some of the fabrics have so many different colors, I am just choosing to use white or cream/ivory. However, on a couple that I am making tomorrow, I am going to use a different colored thread. I also found that just the two layers of cotton didn't feel sturdy enough, so I used a layer of one of my favorite interfacings. I almost had a panic attack when Hancocks didn't have any of the interfacing left, but I was able to find it at Ben Franklins. I think I might end up ordering a bolt online.

I have two picnic placemats finished (one in the shop), three that are almost done, and three are cut out and waiting. I hope to finish them all by the end of the weekend!

New Packaging

I'm continually trying to refine my packaging, and an article today in the Storque on Etsy inspired me to try to be a bit more creative. I want my packaging to be eco-friendly, which means I am striving for less waste. I would like to use packaging that can be reused, which is why I switched from small pieces of cork to metal tins for my pushpins. My problem now is how to wrap the other items in my shop, such as necklaces, coasters, and fabric Moleskine covers.

Since my items are made of fabric, it didn't take me long to think... Maybe I could package them in fabric! I have a lot of fabric scraps that aren't great for buttons (pattern is too big to be of much interest on a small thumbtack or magnet), so I tried to think of a way to incorporate the scraps. I also have a hug amount of unbleached muslin -- I was going to slip cover my couch and make a pattern out of the muslin first, but decided to wait until I can afford to have it reupholstered.

After a bit of pondering -- It finally came to me! I could make simple muslin bags, with a scrap fabric pocket on the front to put my business card it. I will tie the top of the bag with a bit of ribbon (I have waaaaaaaaaay too much ribbon, so now it will be put to good use!), and possibly add a tag. The edges of the pocket and the top of the bag are cut with pinking shears, to make the bag a bit more interesting. The picture above shows what I came up with! I'm going to think of a list of ways that the buyer can reuse the bag and post the list in my shop.

I am also trying to think of a "freebie" to include in orders, or at least larger orders. I had an idea, but it looks like it is going to cost a bit more than I want -- I'd like to keep the free item under 50 cents in cost. I have gotten freebies before that were great -- such as samples of soaps when I bought a couple bars. I've also gotten some that went straight in the trash (sorry) -- hard candy or small stickers (commercial, not handmade). I know that the sellers were well-intentioned, but I really think the freebie should relate to the shop and what what purchased.

Well, I should make more of the muslin bags... but my bobbin is empty, and I'm not in the mood to reload!
